HISTORY OF WOMEN IN THE NAACP (WIN)

In 1977, after Reverend Dr. Benjamin Hooks became the Executive Director of the National NAACP, his wife Frances Dancy Hooks and Earleen Bolden organized Women in NAACP (WIN).

Mrs. Hooks spent most of the 1990’s as the national coordinator for WIN and as the group became known, she encouraged local branches to focus on such issues as teen pregnancy, Black history and AIDS.

WIN was approved as a Standing Committee in 2004 at the Philadelphia National Convention in accordance with Article VIII of the NAACP Constitution and Bylaws. Thelma Daley currently serves as the National Director.

The Purpose of WIN

• To enhance the leadership role of women;
• To serve as an advocacy vehicle for social, economic, political,
   educational, and health and welfare issues
   affecting women,girls and children;
• To support the ongoing work of the NAACP and its units.
